Reflecting on last season, one of my favourite highlights was the Latin American premiere of L'amour de Loin, by Kaija Saariaho. I have loved for so many years this great opera, perhaps the most important yet written in the 21st Century. Under the name El amor distante, I was fortunate to perform this amazing score with the Bellas Artes Theatre Orchestra and Choir, along with an amazing cast (Jaako Kortekangas, Agnieszka Slawinska and Carla López-Speziale, in a dazzling production by Mauricio García Lozano designed by Jorge Ballina. The music is so deep and rich, together with the electronics and the amazing vocal lines, and of course and incredible story. What a privilege! This production will always stick out in my mind as one of the most wonderful projects I have been a part of.

Last season was really amazing. With Aguascalientes Symphony Orchestra we played at the Cervantino Festival, at the Mexico City Historic Centre Festival, Zacatecas Festival and at Leon's Bicentenario Theatre we did opera and multimedia concerts and many more season concerts, popular series and family concerts reaching tens of thousands. I am finishing my second season with the orchestra and things are only getting better: each rehearsal and each concert I feel closer to the musicians and we are reaching new levels of communication and artistry. Working with the Aguascalientes Orchestra is one of the great joys in my life.

Guest conducting is a very important part of any conductor's activities, and I enjoy tremendously working with many orchestras. Some of them are old friends, some of them new discoveries. During this season I was so happy to return to two of my old homes: the Mexico City Philharmonic and the Bellas Artes Theatre Orchestra, where I started out as an assistant back in 1996! I was able to return to Xalapa, Guanajuato, and Bellas Artes Chamber Orchestras, Jerusalem and Braunschweig, and to conduct for the first time the great Estado de México Symphony. I feel privileged to have so many friends and colleagues in my artistic life. On it goes!

I have so much news! It's been one year since my appointment at the Aguascalientes Symphony and things couldn't be better. We have achieved a lot more than I thought possible: we have performed new music works, multimedia shows, two ballets, an opera gala, a full opera production of Trovatore at Leon's Teatro del Bicentenario, and weekly concerts covering lots of repertoire: from Mahler to Zemlinsky to Tan Dun to Bernstein and Debussy, celebrating this last pair on their 2018 centennial. We start our new season with September wholly dedicated to Mexican composers of the 20th and 21st centuries, keeping alive traditional repertoire and performing premieres in Aguascalientes of new composers... We will perform an hommage to Kubrick and the music in his films at the Aguascalientes Book Fair; then we are off to Guanajuato to perform at the Cervantino International Festival. We will end our year with the traditional Nutcracker production and Xmas concerts. Will keep you posted!

Yesterday was my first concert as Artistic and Music Director in Aguascalientes, and I cannot be grateful enough to the orchestra musicians for their wonderful music making, and to amazing soprano Maria Katzarava for being with us to kick off this new era. To highlight the occasion, the Aguascalientes Governor, Martin Orozco, honoured the orchestra by appointing it Cultural Embassador of Aguascalientes as part of their 25th anniversary celebrations. Thank-you to everyone for their trust!

The Carmen production at Leon's Teatro del Bicentenario was absolutely beautiful! Thank you to everybody who made it possible!

I am so excited to announce that I have been appointed Artistic and Music Director to Aguascalientes Symphony, effective on July 18 2017.

Aguascalientes is a growing city of a million inhabitants in central Mexico. It offers one of the best living qualities in Mexico, it has one of the best foreign investment environments in the country, and its yearly fair attracts nearly 9 million people over three weeks every spring.

I have always felt close to the excellent orchestra there; and although I spent many years away in the last decade, our meeting last June was amazing. I was honoured to receive a majority vote from the orchestra and after a warm meeting with the Director of the Culture Institute, Claudia Santa Ana, I got the invitation to join Aguascalientes' vibrant cultural scene. I am really looking forward to our work together! Exciting times.

I am very happy to announce that the DVD of last season's Verdi Requiem, which I conducted together with Mtro.  Placido Domingo, is out!

This is an outstanding document of an incredibly emotional open-air concert, commemorating the 1985 Mexico City earthquake. That tragedy left behind thousands dead, injured and homeless. We dedicated the Requiem to all of them, but also to the unsung heroes of that event: hundreds of volunteers and first responders that worked tirelessly for the victims.

I count that concert as one of the highlights in my life. Honoured to have been part of such an amazing moment!
